We now have a new primary website. This one will be updated also for now as it's the one which most peopole have linked to and Google send people to but if you go to the following Worpress link there is a better one.

We have decided to cut back on our previously fortnightly 'Writer's Reading' events to the last Friday of every month for the Summer. So that means the next one is on Friday 28th May in Berry's Tavern from 9pm as usual.

We have here begun to sketch out what you can expect from us at this years 'Written Word Weekend'. This is as much for ourselves as you. Any names listed have been confirmed. There will be quite a few additions made to this schedule over the coming months. Any ideas for what you would like to see here yourselves please send us your suggestions.

Our last 'Writers Reading' event went very well for us. So well it was decided we should do it more often to have more of a momentum for people to produce work to that deadline. So if you can remember, we will be having it from now on on the second and last Friday of every month. So that means the next one will be on Friday 12th Feb. Usual time and venue, 9pm in Berry's Tavern, Drumshanbo. See you there, new people always very welcome to read their own work or otherwise and also to listen.

12th Feb theme is 'Love and Squalor'. No theme planned for 26th Feb.

We won't be having our monthly 'Writer's Reading' event in December, was to be held on 18th, due to it clashing with so much Christmas activty like parties etc. So we will see you next on Friday 29th January 2010. Thanks to everyone who has come and supported us at any of our events this year and we hope to see you all again. Happy Christmas and have a wonderful New Year.

Poetry Day & Next Event

'All Ireland Poetry Day' went extremely well for us at The Dock. It all started that morning with Eileen doing a workshop with the first years of Carrick's secondary school which was covered by Eileen Magnier for broadcast on RTE's Six One news that evening as they did their bit to publicise Poetry Day. Next Dermot Healy arrived for his workshop at The Dock and this was also filmed for an upcoming documentary on him to be shown on RTE early next year. The main event itself in the theatre attracted over 50 people, many of whom read. Dermot even had time for an unbilled appearance at the beginning of the show. But one of the biggest surprises for us all was the American poet Karen Douglass, pictured, just happening to be on holidays in the area, hearing about our event and approaching us to take part. She read in both halves of the show and we are so grateful for her involvement. David Cameron also did an amazing performance and we are thankful to him for taking part as well. Our other guest Gian Castello did a fine job providing music. In case your wondering how we had an Italian involved, Gian and his partner Kitia run 'The Yellow Ducati B&B' in Drumshanbo where you can also experience a genuine Italian dinner if you give them a call. Stitchy Press also came and set up their stall so thanks to them and of course everyone who showed up.

Our next event is 'Writer's Reading' in Berry's Tavern, Drumshanbo on Friday 30th October and the theme is Halloween. You can still read anything you like but bear in mind some people will be reading ghost stories!

Our next event is Written Word Weekend presents 'All Ireland Poetry Day' at The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim on Thursday 1st October. Each county will be running a poetry themed event today sponsored by Poetry Ireland and at The Dock there will be two events. The main event is free and runs from 6 - 8pm in the theatre with cafe style seating. The line-up features readings from this years iYeats poetry winner Michael Herron, the poet David Cameron plus other members of The Pig Executive writer's group from the Glens Centre and a poetry performance by Kitia Benedetti. Music will be provided by Italian guitarist and dulcimer player Gian Castello. There will also be an open mike for poetry lovers and readers of all ages to participate so please come and get involved. The event is hosted by Eileen O'Toole. There will also be a workshop with the writer and poet Dermot Healy at 3 - 5pm in The Dock. Tickets for this are limited to 15 places, cost €20 and must be booked in advance at The Dock box office at 071-9650828. For more details please see

Workshops/Course

Eileen O'Toole of Written Word Weekend is about to run a creative writing course and series of workshops. Details are listed below for those interested.

Creative Writing for adults: Develop your artistic skills by participating in an enjoyable and inspirational creative writing course. No previous creative writing experience required. This course will include a look at poetry and prose with an option to publish a book of short stories/poems by participants. Creative Writing Workshops for Kids: Venue is Drumshanbo library and these workshops are free. The 3 - 5 year old group need to bring their colouring crayons and must be accompanied by an adult. Writers Reading Night

A chance to speak - An opportunity to listen - A time to write.

The first and annual 'Written Word Weekend' is to be held in Drumshanbo over the 2009 August Bank Holiday weekend (31st July - 3rd August). Expect readings by local writers, poets and playwrights, both published and unpublished, workshops, write-offs and book stalls.

Over the course of the weekend a magazine, 'Written Word Rag', will be compiled of the best material generated by participants in the workshops and write-0ff plus comments, reviews and photos of the event. This will be available for purchase on the final day.

If you are a writer, poet or book seller in the Leitrim or wider area and would like to take part in this event please get in contact. If you would like to help out or sponsor please contact us as well and we can make the first year even better.

The ever popular and long-running traditional Irish music event, the Joe Mooney Summer School, will be running in Drumshanbo from 18th - 25th July. The Written Word Weekend's fundraising launch on the Friday 17th July is set to coincide with many of the students and fans arriving for the event so if you want to find out what to expect please stop by. Once its all over and if you don't want to leave or wish to return you will only have to wait a week before our Written Word Weekend begins and you can again experience life in Drumshanbo.
Also if you are a literary fan during the end of July then Leitrim is certainly the place to be. Starting on 23rd July to 25th will be the third John McGahern International Seminar During this time also, one of our sponsors, The Reading Room in Carrick-on-Shannon, will have two free public readings at their shop, one by Kevin Barry (There are Little Kingdoms) on Friday 24th at 8pm, the other by Claire Keegan (Antarctica & Walk the Bluefields) on 25th July at 3pm. Also in Carrick, at The Dock will be the annual 'Words and Music' event, to be held on Sat 8th August at 2pm in conjunction with the Carrick Water Music festival.
